NFL Playoff Predictions

Now that the dust has settled on the first month of the NFL season, I feel that it is safe to say that we know who are contenders and who are pretenders for this year. I will break down how the divisions will play out, and give you my Super Bowl pick.

Key-
#-Indicates division champ
%-Indicates wild card spot

AFC East
1. New England Patriots 12-4 #
2. New York Jets 11-5 %
3. Miami Dolphins 7-9
4. Buffalo Bills 5-11

It's yet another AFC East title for Brady and the Pats. I certainly feel that the Jets and Mark Sanchez are definite contenders. Now with the addition of Braylon Edwards, their passing attack has another big playmaker. Miami is a solid team, but with Pennington down I just don't see January football in the cards. Buffalo has another heartbreaking season, losing multiple contests in the finals seconds.

AFC North
1. Baltimore Ravens 13-3 #
2. Pittsburgh Steelers 10-6 %
3. Cincinnati Bengals 10-6
4. Cleveland Browns 3-13

Through the first four games Baltimore looks like the most balanced team on both sides of the ball in the division, and maybe in the NFL for that matter. Pittsburgh is wearing a target this year, but with a favorable schedule I see the Steelers playing football in the new year. Cincinnati is definitely no fluke. However, I think the ghost of Bengals past will get them late in the season this year. They aren't ready to contend just yet, but they're going in the right direction. And yeah, the Browns they'll be in the cellar of the division. No surprise.

AFC South
1. Indianapolis Colts 13-3 #
2. Houston Texans 10-6
3. Jacksonville Jaguars 8-8
4. Tennessee Titans 6-10

Manning and the Colts will once again be a force to be reckoned with in the AFC. The Texans and Jags seemed to be very evenly matched. I really feel that the Texans organization has taken all of the necessary steps to build a winner from the ground up. Sadly, I see the Texans just barely missing the playoffs this year. The Jaguars will finish up at .500. Even with Nate Washington, the Titans will finish last in the AFC South.

AFC West
1. Denver Broncos 12-4 #
2. San Diego Chargers 9-7
3. Oakland Raiders 5-11
4 Kansas City Chiefs 2-14

A big surprise in the West. The Cutlerless Broncos have opened the entire league's eyes. I believe they are for real and will win the AFC West. Once again San Diego has started slow. I really feel that this organization has some internal issues, and they won't rebound in the second half this year. Well nothing else needs to be said about Oakland and KC.

NFC East
1. New York Giants 13-3 #
2. Philadelphia Eagles 10-6 %
3. Dallas Cowboys 8-8
4. Washington Redskins 6-10

The New York Giants are clearly the beast of the east. Philly has a strong team this year, and with McNabb healthy is capable of beating almost any team in the NFL. Too bad for Jerry Jones, he misses the playoffs at 8-8. I sense some problems looming in the Redskins locker room, I think their season will go in a downward spiral from here.

NFC North
1. Minnesota Vikings 12-4 #
2. Chicago Bears 11-5 %
3. Green Bay Packers 10-6
4. Detroit Lions 5-11

The NFC North has quickly become arguably the toughest division in football. I think the team with the most balance and skill on both sides of the ball is Minnesota. The Vikes will win the division. The Cutler led Bears are quite a surprise. Nevertheless, I believe in this team. The Bears make the playoffs. Aaron Rodgers will sadly be home on his couch in January watching football, just barely missing the postseason at 10-6. The Lions.....improving.

NFC South
1. New Orleans Saints 13-3 #
2. Atlanta Falcons 9-7
3. Carolina Panthers 7-9
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 4-12

New Orleans is a great team. There isn't much else that needs to be said. Their offense is head and shoulders above everyone else's in that division. Matt Ryan will miss the playoffs in his sophomore season. Don't fret Falcons fans, in that division Atlanta will have their shot. Carolina just doesn't seem to have it this year. And Tampa Bay is in the midst of a rebuilding project.

NFC West
1. San Francisco 49ers 11-5 #
2. Arizona Cardinals 8-8
3. Seattle Seahawks 7-9
4. St. Louis Rams 3-13

A surprise to some, but not to me. San Fran is for real. This team has the right coach and the right personnel for the right situations. The way that the 49ers are put together, I would not be at all surprised to see them make a trip to the Super Bowl. I honestly didn't expect to see the Cards having a good year. They finish at .500. I thought Seattle was going to be good this year, but they disappointed me. The Rams once again can't get it done in the NFC West.

AFC Playoff Seeds
1. Baltimore Ravens 13-3
2. Indianapolis Colts 13-3
3. New England Patriots 12-4
4. Denver Broncos 12-4
5. New York Jets 11-5
6. Pittsburgh Steelers 10-6

NFC Playoff Seeds
1. New York Giants 13-3
2. New Orleans Saints 13-3
3. Minnesota Vikings 12-4
4. San Francisco 49ers 11-5
5. Chicago Bears 11-5
6. Philadelphia Eagles 10-6

PSAC Preview

PSAC Insider Zach Simpson weighs in on week 4 of the NCAA division 2 season:

Seven Weeks, One Goal, The PSAC West Title and a spot in the “State Game”

In Division II college football few conferences are as competitive and compelling as the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference). Made up of sixteen football competitive members, the PSAC is divided in two divisions the East and the West. The PSAC east is made up of Cheney University, East Stroudsburg University, West Chester University, CW Post, Bloomsburg, Kutztown, Millersville, and Shippensburg. The West is contested between Lock Haven University, Indiana University of PA, Clarion, Edinboro, Mercyhust, Gannon, Slippery Rock, and California University. Competition is very strong in the PSAC and around the nation. Division II football unlike the Football Bowl Subdivision plays a 24 team playoff. The nation is split into four regions, each region receives six playoff bids and they play a tournament to crown a National Champion.

Starting last season the PSAC reinstated a “State Game” or Conference Championship game. The champion of the PSAC West will meet the champion of the PSAC East on the Eastern Division Champions home field. Last season the Vulcans of California defeated the Golden Rams of West Chester to claim the Championship.

All eyes of the sixteen teams have been focused on November 7th, as that is the date of this seasons “State Game.” In the first three weeks teams have positioned themselves for the division race. The games up to this point will have had bearing nationally and regionally, but in the PSAC the season begins this Saturday.

This Saturday four games will be played, the winners will be in place to continue a push for the “State Game” and a PSAC West Crown. Many had picked the Vulcans of California as the preseason choice to win the West as well as the Region, the Vulcans have stumbled out of the gate with a 1-2 mark. IUP has soared up the rankings with a 3-0 start. A popular pick to be a sleeper was the Fighting Scots of Edinboro. They also hit a bump when they lost a game at home vs. Shippensburg. The Pride of Slippery Rock have stayed unbeaten at 3-0. Mercyhurst and Clarion are both 1-2, Gannon is 2-1 and the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven are the only PSAC west team without a win sitting at 0-2. Every team has time to make a turnaround and every team is still playing for something. The next seven weeks will show how much the hard work of these teams will pay off.

Week 4, Week 1 of PSAC West Games.

Gannon (2-1) @ California (1-2) 12pm.

In a game many feel should be a cake walk for the Vulcans, I take a different look. Last season the Knights of Gannon played hard and made it very much a competitive game and if not for one of the best offense showings of the season, the Vulcans may have been in trouble. California is coming off a huge win this past week, when they defeated the then ranked Golden Rams of West Chester on their home field. Gannon had an easy win over Cheney this past week 30-9. This is a trap game for Cal they must come out focused on the task at hand. A loss here and the season could go away very fast. They have to look ahead and see the IUP game and the importance that game may hold, but at this time they must be focused on one game and that game is Gannon. Cal should pull away in the second half and win 35-17.

Lock Haven (0-2) @ Clarion (1-2) 6pm.

This Saturday the Bald Eagles may have their best chance for a win as they travel down I-80 to play the Golden Eagles. Clarion still has high hopes as they should. They could move back to a five-hundred record and into first place in the West. Clarion must rebound from two disappointing games and show they have some bite left on the season. Lock Haven on the other hand should focus on getting the ball into the end zone. After two games the Bald Eagles have scored 7 points. These are college kids with a self pride, much closer than it should be, Clarion 24 Lock Haven 21

#21/13 Indiana (3-0) @ Mercyhurst (1-2)

IUP has not looked very good in the opening weeks of the 2009 season, a seven point victory at Southern Connecticut State, followed by two lack luster performances over CW Post and Millersville. They have been carried by their Defense. Mercyhurst lost last week to the #4 team in Division II by 10 points. Mercyhurst is a stingy football team who would love nothing better than to throw a wrench into the IUP plans to return to the playoffs. IUP plays SRU, Cal and Edinboro the next three weeks win those three and the West champion should be IUP and the kids up in the hills know this. I look for IUP to look past the Lakers and this to be a game late in the forth. IUP will prevail on the power of its D. IUP 20 Mercyhurst 17

Slippery Rock (3-0) @ Edinboro (2-1) 6pm

The PSAC West game of the week should be an early season classic. After a bump against Shippensburg the Scotts rebounded vs. CW Post last week. QB Trevor Harris is one of the best in all of the NCAA not only D2. Slippery Rock is the surprise team in the PSAC. With the fast start, the “P” word is being thrown around the campus. These two teams understand the importance of this division battle. I look for the winner of this game to make a playoff run. The loser is in no way out of the race but it would be a huge blow. Slippery Rock will continue its early season run and win on the road 24-23.

In a week with so much on the line it’s hard to say anything for sure, all that can be said for sure is that in the playoff format every game takes on more and more importance.

Season Picks:

1. California 6-1

2. IUP 6-1

3. Slippery Rock 5-2

4. Edinboro 4-3

5. Clarion 3-4

6. Mercyhurst 2-5

7. Gannon 2-5

8. Lock Haven 0-7

Everyone have a great holiday weekend, and enjoy all of the football!!!!

Upsets and the Expected, Week 1 in the PSAC

To make things easier on my extremely busy life, I have hired my first writer to my blog staff. Let me be the first to introduce our PSAC insider, Zach Simpson. I recently talked about in my CAL Football 2009 Preview that I wanted to really have a weekly post on PSAC and Vulcan Football. Well I thought it over, and made a decision. I decided that to do this, I needed the insight of a man who walks the campus of California University, and lives for Vulcan football. I could not think of any person other than close, personal friend of mine, Zach Simpson. He is currently in his senior year at Cal, but I know he will be attending Vulcan games with his hardhat and cowbell for many years to come.

Once a week, Zach will send me the prior weeks wrap-up, and a preview of the top matchups for the coming week. This is the first installment of "Zach Simpson, PSAC Insider."

Week 2, a chance to make noise!!!!

In week 1 of the PSAC season many things went as expected, and many things went, well not as expected. As a whole the PSAC went 9-5 out of League for the weekend. Impressive wins by Clarion, Bloomsburg, Edinboro, and IUP give the conference faithful much to be excited about. Disappointments abounded throughout the league as well, The California loss to unranked Saginaw Valley State was a major let down for the Vulcan’s who entered the weekend with a top ten ranking. A Wayne State drubbing of Mercyhurst took the wind out of the Lakers Sails. CW Post and Shippensburg also had set backs, but they were not completely unexpected.

In the two biggest wins for the League from week one you can stay on I80 and visit both of these fine institutions. First as the Golden Eagles of Clarion traveled south to Fairmont State and walked out of town with a twelve point victory. The Eagles have a core of young returning players and they really have a chance to make lots of noise as they are off to a solid start to the season.

The other big win for the PSAC came from the Danny Hale Coached Bloomsburg Huskies who took a 10-7 victory over the Nationally ranked Eagles of Ashland University. Holding the high powered offense of Ashland to 7 points could prove to be the most impressive stat from this game, because the Ashland offense should put up plenty of points on their GLIAC opponents.

The biggest let down has to come from the Mon-Valley, four time defending PSAC west champs fell out of conference to the unranked the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals. The Vulcans were mistake prone, failed to take advantage of opportunities, out worked, and generally out played. With that said, with two minutes left they were driving inside the Cardinal fifty with a chance to tie or win the game.

In other games from the past weekend, Gannon won by a point over the Storm of Lake Erie College 35-34. Virginia Union did not have the firepower to hang with the Warriors of East Stroudsburg and fell 19-6. Millersville, IUP and K-town all won games over NE-10 competition 31-28, 28-21 and 17-13 respectively. The Rock won by three over a Bowie State team with much experience who looks to compete in the CIAA this season, so a solid win for the Rock to open the season. In the only cross over of the weekend the Golden Rams dismantled the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven 43-0.

As we look back on the weekend we see many great storylines emerging and many still to be discovered, a few to think about may in fact be the expected: How good is Bloomsburg, West Chester and East Stroudsburg out east. How can Cal rebound, how good is Edinboro and IUP, and what about the Eagles of Clarion? Some of these will be answered this coming weekend as the first full week of cross-over games take place.

In week 2 many opportunity arise for programs to make major statements, regroup or even take that step towards the “P” word, playoffs. Some huge contest should make for a very exciting weekend of football all across the state.

In a preview of what many felt would be the “State Game 2009” the Huskies of Bloomsburg come to the Mon-Valley to play the Vulcans of California University of Pennsylvania. The Huskies are 1-0 and ranked #6 in the country and the Vulcans 0-1 have dropped to #17. Danny Hale’s Huskies hold a 4-2 mark vs Cal and will look to build on the momentum gained against Ashland last Thursday. Coach Luckhardt and the Vulcans must shake off the major disappointment and reenergize the fan base after the set back last Thursday. I look for a tight game and a hard fought battle. Sr. Dan Lattorre may have some unfinished business with Cal after the regional championship last fall.

Bloom 27 Cal 24

In the Second Biggest game of the weekend the Golden Bears of Kutztown will visit beautiful Clarion PA, and the winner will move to 2-0 and makes a case for early playoff talk. Coach Jay Foster has changed the culture at Clarion and he looks to continue to build on the momentum of the first week of the season. K-town may be a sleeper in the PSAC east race and could make a huge statement this weekend. I am absolutely in love with the game and cant wait to see who stands up, and mans up in the gut check game for these two programs.

Clarion 31 K-town 27

The Fighting Scotts will look to move up the rankings as the Rocky Reiss coached Red Raiders of Shipensburg come calling to Sox Harrison Stadium. I have much respect for the Raiders but QB Trevor Harris and the Scotts will be to much as they will roll along this week, 37-17

Gannon 1-0 will host ESU 1-0, both looking for bigger and better things in 2009 after lackluster 2008 seasons. Gannon can ride their weird home field advantage early but may come up short in the end as ESU walks away with a 21-14 win.

The Lakers and the Wolves are the only matchup of teams with out a win, but the Lakers wont be without a win for long and the Wolves will continue to struggle falling 45-14 in Erie to the Lakers.

Coach Tepper and the IUP Hawks should roll over the CW-post Pioneers from Miller Stadium this Saturday. IUP has more speed, talent and heart and should win going away 24-3.

Slippery Rock and Millersville: much like the GU, ESU game this is a gut check game, a chance to stay un beaten and move along toward division play. Millersville should come away with a victory but SRU is always tough on home field. I see MU, 24- 22 on a late charge that comes up short by the ROCK.

Week 2 is poised to be exciting and bring our fans to their feet, Cal Bloom should be an all time classic, If your are in the Valley come to the stadium come see a family grow together or shatter in front of everyone. I expect the Vulcans to be excited and play a great game and give our fans something to be proud of. Kickoff is 7pm live on FSN Pittsburgh.

Remember win or lose we are members of the Vulcan family. We stand and fight together. We back each other, and we will achieve great success together.

Shocked

Bacco Iso
One of the most anticipated season openers in California Vulcans football history did not end the way the Cal U faithful anticipated. Hosting unranked Saginaw Valley (Mich), the Vulcans were upset on their home field by a score of 23-17. That marks just the second regular season loss for the Vulcans in the last three seasons.

California and Saginaw Valley were deadlocked at 7 early in the 2nd quarter. However, it wasn't a matter of two teams playing a chess match with each other. Cal was just hanging on.

Late in the second quarter it had looked like Cal got the break they needed. Dominique Curry blocked a Cardinals punt that rolled through the endzone for a safety. Cal took a 9-7 lead. Nevertheless, the slim lead and Cal's momentum were short lived. On the ensuing free kick, Saginaw Valley recovered a California fumble deep in Vulcan territory. Just a few short plays later, Saginaw Valley claimed the lead after tight end Galen Stone scored on a 12 yard reverse play. The score at the half read, Saginaw Valley 14, and California 9.

Early in the third quarter, the Vulcans running back Freddie Bacco cashed in on his second rushing touchdown of the game. With a successful two-point conversion, the Vulcans took a 17-14 lead. Saginaw Valley quickly responded by scoring a touchdown and recording a safety to take a 23-17 lead, with 5:04 remaining in the 4th quarter.

Cal drove down to the Cardinals 32 yard line before a Josh Portis pass was intercepted. That marked the first home opener loss in six seasons for the Vulcans.

Leaving the capacity crowd at Adamson Stadium, I can honestly tell you that the crowd was in total shock. You could just feel the energy leaving that field along with all of the fans. I have never heard that stadium so quiet. #8 California was knocked off on their home turf, by an unranked opponent.

Now it's time for Cal to man up, and play football. It won't get any easier when #11 Bloomsburg comes to "The Valley" next weekend. I know that the defense will be there, but it's just a matter of what offense shows up. After only one week, I can truthfully say that I am not sold on new QB Josh Portis. An entire O-Line that returned was manhandled all night by the Cardinals. The explosive receiving corps had a case of the drops, and did not impress in the season opener.

It's a long season, but I think we will find out what the Vulcans and this coaching are made of. Another tough game next weekend. Bloomsburg at California, 7:00 PM at Adamson Stadium.

2009 California Vulcans Preview

I would like to let everyone know of a new subject that I will be reporting to you, the readers. Something that I have fallen in love with over the past two years, will now be shared with you. Not many blogs cover division 2 football. So as the old saying goes, there's a first time for everything. In this case, we may have the first Pittsburgh based blog covering the local California Vulcans.

Anyone who has not attended Adamson Stadium, on the campus of California University, should most definitely get to a game this fall. You get great football, great atmosphere, and great fun, all for a very cheap price. Be sure to stop by the alumni tent on the way into the game for the scrumptious spread of free food.

I myself have fallen in love with this team. The team, is the California Vulcans. My sister is currently in her junior year at Cal, and with her being in the marching band, I actively attend as many Vulcan football games as possible. As I said before, these games are great. It truly is the college atmosphere, just packed into a smaller stadium. The kids still load up with antifreeze before the game, and those same students paint their chests and pack "Armenti's Army" to watch their beloved Vulcans.

team_break

Now let's talk some football. California plays in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and have been crowned conference champions for the past two seasons. In the past two years, Coach John Luckhardt and his Vulcans have compiled quite the impressive resume. In the last two years, the Vulcans have compiled an impressive 25-3 record, two PSAC championships, and two straight trips to the NCAA Semifinals. The Vulcans quest for the national championship has ended at home the last two seasons, losing to the eventual champion both times. Valdosta State and Minnesota-Duluth respectively.

Above: Senior WR Marcel Pestano sits alone on the bench
as his dream for a national championship
ended on a snowy, Saturday afternoon last year
to eventual champ Minnesota-Duluth.

Looking to build off of the great 2007 and 2008 seasons, Cal begins the 2009 campaign as the 8th ranked team in the country. As usual, the PSAC competition will be tough again this season. Including the Vulcans, five teams are ranked in the preseason polls. Those teams are Bloomsburg(11), West Chester(20), Edinboro(21), and IUP(22). All of these four teams appear on the California schedule in 2009.

On offense the Vulcans will return seven starters, including the entire offensive line from last year. The 2008 offense averaged 35.6 points and 429.4 yards of total offense per game. New offensive coordinator Mike T. Jacobs brings nearly 30 years of college coaching experience to Cal. With increased depth at all spots, and new playmakers at all of the skilled positions, many believe that this will be the most explosive offense in school history.

gen_fb08team

Now let's take a look at the playmakers on offense...

Quarterback:
For the second straight year the Vulcans will be lead offensively by a division one transfer. Last year, Kevin McCabe came over from Virginia to lead the Vulcans to the national semifinals. This year, dual threat quarterback Josh Portis has transfered into Cal from Maryland. Josh is the cousin of Redskins running back Clinton Portis. Josh's goal this year is simple: lead the Vulcans to the national title game in Florence, Alabama. Portis was one of the most highly sought after quarterbacks in the nation coming out of high school in 2004. His senior year, Portis had a combined total of 49 touchdowns. Cal has excellent depth behind Portis, in the unfortunate event of an injury. That also bodes well for the coming years.

Above: Josh Portis bears a striking resemblance to former Pitt hoops
star Sam Young.

Running Back
The Vulcans lost two All PSAC-West running backs last year in Daine Williams and Brandon Lombardy. However, the Vulcans will display enormous amounts of talent this season. After two seasons of mainly being a third down and short yardage back, Windell Brown returns as the starting RB. Brown has rushed for 969 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career, and amazingly he has not even surpassed the 150 carries mark yet. Let me tell you folks, Brown is a physical specimen. He completely runs over defenders, but can make anyone miss in the open field. He is worth the price of admission. Along side Brown in the backfield, will once again be senior Freddie Bacco. The senior rushed for 6 touchdowns last year. A third player expected to see extended action in the backfield is Junior Cody Wilson. Wilson transfered from divison 1, The Citadel. Wilson is the prototypical power back, who adds great depth to the position. The last player to fit into the running back mix is sophomore Dane Conwell, who transfered from division 1 Indiana. Conwell played linebacker for the Hoosiers, but will be on the offensive side of the ball for the Vulcans. Because of depth and versatility, Wilson and Conwell are expected to see action as a fullback.

against Edinboro last season.

Wide Receivers
The Vulcans suffered the loss of record setting receiver, Marcel Pestano to graduation. However, this year Cal features more depth and speed at the position. Leading the way will be preseason All-American AJ Jackson. Jackson, a senior, caught ten touchdown passes last year. Also returning will be Blackhawk alum, Josh Gumbert and South Florida transfer Chedrick Cherry. Gumbert and Cherry are both sophomores. Last year as a freshman, Josh Gumbert saw extended playing time and was a huge piece of the Vulcans offense. His role will increase this year with the Vulcans. California has also brought in two legitimate playmaking transfers at the position. Dominique Curry comes to Cal after being a basketball star at Cheyney University, and JUCO transfer Terrance Moore will bring some blazing speed to the offense.

All and all, California will feature a plethora of talent on the offensive side of the ball this year. They have a great blend of veterans, mixed in with some very talented newcomers. The Vulcans have two players on offense that are listed on the preseason All-PSAC team, OL Nate Nurse and WR AJ Jackson. Factor in the return of the entire offensive line and you can easily realize that this will be an explosive unit.

Defense
It was only two short years ago that California's defense lead the country in three of the major statistical categories in 2007. This year, the defense features more speed and leadership than last year. In 2007, the defense lost many to graduation, but now two years later, the defense looks poised for a huge year. The Vulcans will return 8 starters on the defensive side of the ball. The defense will be led by All-American cornerback Terrence Johnson, and Gene Upshaw Award finalist, defensive end Willie Walker. The Gene Upshaw Award is given to the best defensive lineman in division 2 football. Johnson is a four year starter, and Walker is a three year starter.

Below: All-American Senior CB Terrance Johnson.

Defensive Line
The Vulcans return all three starters up front including three time All-PSAC selection, Willie Walker. Walker was third on the team in tackles in 2008. Another senior, Brandon Gordon returns with Walker. Gordon led the team with 8.5 tackles for loss last year, along with 4.5 sacks. Second year starter Sam Fikaris comes back to the d-line also. Fikaris has started all 28 games in his career at California. Seeing limited action last year, junior Gabe Hernandez will have a new role this year. Hernandez will be used mostly as a rush linebacker. He ranked amongst the team leaders with 7.0 tackles for a loss last year. With Hernandez's versatility, he adds quality depth to the Vulcans defense up front. Another key piece on the D-Line is Steve Santia. He provides good experience and depth. Santia played in all 14 games last year as a redshirt freshman.

out of their PSAC opponents.

Linebackers
Another defensive position that Cal is loaded at, will be linebacker. Cal brings back several experienced players at the position. The talented trio of Dontey Brown, Brett Diamond, Matt McClellan, will bring great leadership to the defense. Diamond started the final eight games of the 2008 season as a true freshman. In that span he recorded 37 tackles. Penn State transfer Dontey Brown had a stellar first season with Cal last year. Brown registered 43 tackles last season. Matt McClellan ranked fifth on the team in total tackles with 46 in his first year as a starter. Cal also displays great depth at this position. Sophomores Terrance Hemsley, and James Lipsey, have both developed very nicely this offseason. Both saw spot duties last year as true freshmen. Also redshirt freshman Shawn Patil and Iowa Central transfer Anthony Roberts, showed great potential in camp.

Burns Saving Tackle

Cornerbacks
The Vulcan defense also be experienced and deep at the cornerback position. All-American Terrence Johnson returns as one of the nations top playmakers on defense. Johnson has totaled 13 interceptions in his career. Junior Patrick Swearinger will start opposite Johnson for the second straight year. Swearinger proved to be a clutch defender last year, as all three of his interceptions came against nationally ranked opponents. Senior Trey Allen provides some veteran depth to the secondary. Cal also brought in a pair of division one transfers who will be lobbying for playing time. Mike Brown from Virginia, and Derek Bailey from Syracuse.

Safeties
The only defensive position to feature two new starters is at safety. Senior Josh Menendez will start at free safety this year. Sophomore Shawn Anderson as moved to free safety this spring, he adds quality depth to the last line of defense. Erik Harris was a special teams ace last year for the Vulcans. He looks to be challenging for the starting strong safety spot with Rontez Miles

California looks like a very, very dangerous team on paper. With experience watching this team play the last two years, I know that they will not disappoint on the field. The coaching staff will have this team ready to play week in and week out.

The Vulcans showcase a rare blend of tremendous talent, leadership, depth, and speed on both sides of the ball, that might be unmatched by any other school in the PSAC, or division 2 for that matter. Cal U totals six players selected to the All-PSAC Preseason team.

Looking at the Vulcans schedule, we will see what they are made of in the first three weeks. Cal opens at home with talented Saginaw Valley (Mich.), hosts #11 Bloomsburg in week 2, and travels to #20 West Chester in week 3.

Saginaw Valley is coming off of a great 2008 season, and would like nothing more than to spoil the Vulcans home opener. Coach John Luckhardt went out of Pennsylvania to schedule this non -conference game against a team out the tough Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Last year California split in two games with Bloomsburg. The Huskies took the week 2 contest last year, but Cal won the more important match up in the Super Region One Final. Playing Bloomsburg at home is a definite advantage for Cal, but this game is still not an easy win.

West Chester lost three times to Cal in the year of 2008. The Vulcans and Coach John Luckhardt are a team that just has the Golden Rams' number. Even though WCU is ranked in the top 25, I am not fully sold on a team that has lost four straight game to the Vulcans. I see Cal easily taking care of business on the road.

Another game to look out for is in week 6 at IUP. Cal has played IUP extremely close the last two years. The Vulcans have taken the last two in this rivalry game, but for it to be a rivalry game both teams need to win. I think that this might be the year that the Crimson Hawks can upset their hated rivals. Not a definite loss, but certainly not an easy win either.

The only other tough game that the Vulcans might see is out of Edinboro. The Fighting Scots' played Cal a tough game at home against Cal last year. The Vulcans won a tight contest on the road 35-31. I must admit, I am not sold on Edinboro this year. The Fighting Scots' are going to come to "The Valley" and I see Cal making quick work of them.

So I have counted five tough games this year for the Vulcans. Saginaw Valley, Bloomsburg, West Chester, IUP, and Edinboro. I think the Vulcans will escape this tough trek mostly unscathed. I see Cal losing only one of these five games. My gut tells me that they will lose to IUP this year.

So I see Cal going 9-1 in the regular season, and winning the PSAC Championship game on November 7. The last two seasons, the Vulcans have made a postseason run to the National Semifinals. This year the Vulcans have a team that is deeper and more talented than those previous two teams. The Sky is the Limit for the 2009 California Vulcans.

Could an Undrafted Rookie, Be a Huge key to the Steelers Ground Game?

Isaac Redman ended last fall as the all time leading rusher in Bowie State University history. Bowie State University is a division 2 school that plays in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. After the NFL draft in April, Isaac Redman was left undrafted and without a job. A first team CIAA player, it appeared that Redman's football career was all but over.

That all changed when the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers decided to give Redman a shot. Redman's unusual blend of size, footwork, speed, work ethic, and determination was what really attracted head coach Mike Tomlin. Redman was one of 22 rookies the Steelers added to their offseason roster. Now Redman is one of the few that stand poised to make the final roster. Redman certainly has the resume to make it in the NFL. He possess good size at 6'0, 230 pounds, but honestly, he resembles #36 in the way that he refuses to go down.

Isaac Redman Ends Bowie State Career as All-Time Rushing Yards Leader

Isaac Redman accumulated quite a resume while at Bowie State. In 2004, Redman was named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team. That same year, he was named offensive player of year for Bulldogs. The next three seasons at Bowie State, Redman was named to the All-CIAA First Team, while also being named to the All-Southeast Region Team in 2005. Redman, the schools all-time leading rusher, ran for 3,300 total yards from scrimmage.

The Steelers drafted RB Frank Summers 5'10, 240lbs, to fill the role of the short yardage back. Redman has definitely given Summers, and other backs a run for their money for the job. In the first preseason game against Arizona, Redman first opened the coaches eyes. He scored twice on runs of three and five yards to help the Steelers edge the Cards. Now I do understand that this was against what was mostly the second and third teams of Arizona. While most of us ponder that thought, so did head coach Mike Tomlin. Hoping to see if the preseason scores were just a fluke, Tomlin threw Redman into the fire of the goal line test. Isaac Redman did not disappoint, as he scored three times against the Steelers number one defense, which needless to say opened a lot of eyes. One very impressed Steeler is center, Justin Hartwig. "He really just has a knack of knowing where the hole is," Hartwig said. "As lineman we really appreciate the way he's running the ball."

3420 Isaac Redman and Ziggy Hood by Ron Pradetto.

After the stellar preseason game, and so far training camp, Redman is being given the majority of the carriers in the short yardage drills. This might tell you who the leading candidate is for that open spot.

Watching some of Redman's highlight videos on YouTube, I really was blown away. As stated earlier, Redman has a rare blend of size, speed, and agility, but he never goes down easy. This could be a gem of a find for the Steelers. Redman appears to be an athlete with an extremely high ceiling.

It certainly isn't everyday that undrafted rookies steal the spotlight. An even rarer occurrence is when the undrafted player actually makes a name for himself in the NFL. Isaac Redman looks poised to do just that; and even more amazing is that this undrafted rookie attended a division 2 school. Small schoolers in the NFL certainly do not dominate most rosters, however there are always the occasional few that can become a rarity. For example, Redskins linebacker London Fletcher attended division 3 John Carroll University. Fletcher was also undrafted.

Above: London Fletcher at D3 John Carroll

Now the great thing about the preseason and training camp is that the coaches have a chance to experiment with different schemes, strategies, and players. With three preseason games left, I anticipate Isaac Redman to be given more reps. Not only in the second half, but I would like to see Redman going with the first team offense. If this kid is the real deal, the only way to tell for sure is to send him out against 1st team defenses. Who knows, maybe #33 can become the next #36.

Summerville High School's Storybook Season

We now introduce the second installment Pittsburgh Fever Amazing Sports Stories. Our last story was about how Bryan Fuller pitched 21 innings shutout innings in 24 hours. If your a new reader, I truly suggest reading this amazing story. If you are someone who does not believe in miracles or don't believe how God has a hand in things, I do not suggest reading this. So sit back and enjoy the emotional journey of the Summerville High School Basketball team that they had during the 2007-2008 season.

In the town of Charleston, SC there is one man who goes by two titles. Coach and Captain. That man's name is Louis Mulkey. When Mulkey is not at his day job on Engine #15 for the Charleston Fire Department, he is at the football field and basketball court at Summerville High School. Mulkey is an assistant coach for the Summerville football team, but it is basketball that was his true passion. Along with his wife, basketball and the boys he coached at Summerville was his love. Louis Mulkey did not have kids. His basketball team was his children. Coach Mulkey was such a father figure to some players that he often lent them money. If one of his kids needed to eat before a game, he would pick them up and buy them dinner so that they would have food prior to playing.

Mulkey began coaching at Summerville as the 8th grade boys basketball coach. As the 8th grade coach Mulkey made a prediction to his team. Mulkey told his team that when they were seniors in 2008, they would win a state championship. According to his wife Lauren, all Mulkey would talk about was how these boys could get a ring before they graduated Summerville High School. Mulkey preached and preached to the group that they would win state as seniors until the summer before their senior season.

June 18, 2007. There was a local furniture store that caught on fire. Mulkey and his fellow firefighters on Engine 15 were called into work. The blaze was terrible. Many described the smoke as going on for miles. Charleston firefighter Billy Perez, who was off duty, called into an engine that was on the scene. Perez heard fear in a friend's voice on the phone of the engine that he called. That man then told Perez that he needed to get on the scene. Once Perez arrived he heard what the fearful news was. Louis Mulkey was missing. At 7:32 PM, 24 minutes after the initial blaze started, a mayday call from Mulkey came over the radio from the inside of the burning building. Mulkey's final words over the radio, "Tell my wife I said I love you."

One day after his first wedding anniversary, Louis Mulkey was dead. He was only 34. In all there were 9 men, who are now know as the Charleston 9, died that day. It was the nation's worst firefighter tragedy since September 11.

Summerville basketball players were shocked. AJ Greene said, "I just couldn't believe it at first...then it just hit me and I started crying." Matt-Matt Galbreath told himself that Mulkey was only on vacation and coming back. The coach who believed in them, the coach he guided them, the man who acted like a father was gone.

Six months later, Summerville High Schools basketball team took the floor....without him. The Summerville team banded together and decided not to mourn. They found that the best way to heal was to play, and they best way to honor was to win the state title that their coach had predicted five seasons ago. The Charleston fire department had a black fire helmet with a number 15 on it. Engraved on the helmet, was Coach Mulkey. Fully knowing and understanding the whole situation, the Charleston Fire Department presented the Summerville basketball
team with the helmet so Louis Mulkey was always on the bench, right there with them.

The team carried the helmet to every single game. They placed it on the fourth seat of the bench, where Mulkey sat for every game. Summerville High School had never won a state title in basketball ever before. But by time the playoffs rolled around the Green Wave had amassed a record of 20-3, and were hitting their stride. Three straight playoff wins carried Summerville to the State Semifinals where they would have to play Sumter High School. As the game got deeper, the game got tighter. Then the crowd and the spirit of Louis Mulkey began to come alive. The Summerville faithful chanted "Lou-is Mul-key" over and over and over. Summerville fed off of the crowd and grabbed the lead, and kept it for good. Summerville had made it to the state championship game.

February 29, 2008, the biggest game in Summerville High School history. The mission: Beat Spartanburg and win the state title for Louis Mulkey. From the opening tip the game was close. Exchanging baskets, and the lead multiple times. It came down to the final minute when Summerville's Bruce Haynes gave the Green Wave the lead. Lauren Mulkey was ecstatic. She thought right there that Summerville had won state. With 1.2 seconds to go and up by 2 points, Haynes was at the free throw line shooting a one and one, with a chance to ice the game for Mulkey and Summerville High School. Haynes missed the front end of the one and one. A Spartanburg player grabbed the rebound, took two dribbles, and heaved a 65 foot shot down the court. They red light on the backboard lit up signaling time had expired. Not long after, the shot went in. Just like that, it was all over. The team who had gone through so much, got all this way and lost the state championship game. They collapsed on the court in tears, in disbelief, and watched somebody else celebrate their own miracle. The final score, Spartanburg 51, Summerville 50.

But maybe it wasn't supposed to end this way. What if there was still hope left? There was. The referees got together for a conference. And then the celebration began. The meeting was broken and one of the officials signaled that the buzzer sounded before the ball left the player's hand. Summerville 50, Spartanburg 48. As predicted five years ago, Summerville had won the South Carolina 4A state championship. The players in disbelief, shed tears of joy, together. Just minutes after the game, Lauren Mulkey came on the court to join her kids in celebration.

The season was not over yet. At 1:00 AM on their way back from winning the State Championship, there was one more stop to make. The team stopped at the grave of Louis Mulkey. They gathered around the grave in a circle and said a prayer for him. Some players even left their state championship medals at the grave with Mulkey. What happened on February 29, 2008 was more than just a game. That my friends, was a miracle

Outside the Lines did a report on this last year. It's a two part video so here are the links to watch the whole story.
